Professional Printing Guide & Best Practices (2025 Edition)
Printing genuine Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is the highest discipline in the FDM/FFF sector. This manufacturer-approved manual contains all the information necessary to produce high-performance, reproducible parts using SUNLU PEEK filament.
Target Audience: Experienced engineers, industrial 3D printing technicians, R&D departments, and certified service providers. This material is not for beginners. Failure to follow these instructions will lead to clogged nozzles, delamination, warping, or permanent damage to the machine.
1. Mandatory Printer and Environmental Requirements
| Requirement | Minimum Requirement | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Printer Type | Fully enclosed, actively heated chamber | Industrial machines (Intamsys FUNMAT PRO 410, Vision Miner 22 IDEX, Roboze, 3DGence Industry F420) |
| Max. Nozzle Temp. | 450 °C continuous operation | 500 °C-capable hotend |
| Chamber Temp. | 80–120 °C actively controlled (±2 °C stability) | 90–100 °C with circulating air fans |
| Bed Temp. | 150 °C continuous operation | 160–180 °C possible |
| Hotend | All-metal, no PTFE in the hot zone | E3D Volcano/Mosquito Magnum+, Slice Copperhead, Dyze Typhoon |
| Nozzle Material | Hardened steel, ruby, or tungsten carbide | Ruby 0.40–0.60 mm strongly recommended |
| Extruder | Direct drive, ≥70 N torque | Bondtech BMG, Hemera XS, or servo |
| Print Surface | PEI sheet, Garolite G10/FR4, or glass + adhesive | Vision Miner Nano Polymer Adhesive |
| Drying | 120 °C at least 8 h before each print | Filament dryer < 0.005 % residual moisture |
| Ambient Humidity | < 20 % RH | Air-conditioned print room |
Consumer printers (Prusa, Creality, Bambu Lab, AnkerMake, etc.) are unsuitable and will be destroyed.
2. Filament Storage & Drying (Vital)
- SUNLU PEEK is delivered vacuum-packed with molecular sieve.
- After opening, store immediately in a dry box (< 8 % RH) or dryer at 80 °C.
- Before each print, dry for at least 8–12 h at 120 °C (if stored open for > 4 h, dry for 16 h).
- Residual moisture must be < 0.02 % (150 ppm); otherwise, hydrolysis and bubble formation will occur.
3. Proven SUNLU PEEK Print Profiles (2025)
| Parameter | First Layer | Subsequent Layers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nozzle Temperature | 410–420 °C | 395–410 °C | Reduce after layer 3 if necessary |
| Bed Temperature | 150–160 °C | 140–150 °C | |
| Chamber Temp. | 90–100 °C | 90–100 °C | Maintain throughout |
| Print Speed | 20–25 mm/s | 30–40 mm/s | 30 mm/s = mechanically optimal |
| Layer Height | 0.15–0.25 mm | ||
| Infill | 100 % or Gyroid 40–60 % | ||
| Flow | 100–105 % | Calibrate with a single-wall cube | |
| Fan | 0 % (completely off) | Any airflow leads to immediate warping | |
| Retraction Distance | 0.5–0.8 mm | Keep very low due to oozing | |
| Retraction Speed | 20–25 mm/s | ||
| Brim | 15–25 mm wide | Absolutely necessary |
4. Adhesion Techniques That Actually Work
- Vision Miner Nano Polymer Adhesive (Reference)
- PEEK-specific high-temperature adhesive (Magigoo HT, 3DXTech ThermaX HTS)
- Garolite G10/FR4 + thin layer of PVP glue stick
- Clean PEI bed + 420 °C first layer + 20 mm/s
Do not use hairspray, ABS slurry, or masking tape solutions.
5. Post-processing: Stress-Relieving Anneal (mandatory for full performance)
Unannealed PEEK ≈ 30 % crystallinity → HDT ≈ 176 °C; Properly annealed → 35–40 % crystallinity → HDT > 310 °C
Recommended annealing program (in an oven, component embedded in fine quartz sand or on a PTFE plate):
- Heating rate 3 °C/min up to 200 °C
- Hold 2–3 h (+30 min per 10 mm wall thickness)
- Cooling rate 1 °C/min down to 140 °C
- Then allow to cool naturally
6. Safety & Maintenance
- Printing temperatures are above the decomposition temperature of PTFE → high-performance exhaust/ventilation is mandatory.
- Wear heat-resistant gloves – molten PEEK causes deep burns.
- Replace the nozzle every 200–400 g of PEEK (due to coking).
- Perform cold-pulls with cleaning filament after every spool.
- Never leave PEEK prints unattended.
7. Quick Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Severe warping | Chamber too cold or fan on | Chamber ≥ 95 °C, fan 0 % |
| Layer separation | Nozzle too cold / wet filament | Temp +10 °C, re-dry filament for 12 h |
| Nozzle clogged | Moisture or coking | Dry + cold-pull + new nozzle |
| Stringing | Retraction too low | Temp −5…10 °C, retraction 0.8 mm |
| Brittle parts | No annealing | Carry out full annealing program |
Final words from the SUNLU development team
When printed and annealed correctly, SUNLU PEEK delivers:
- Tensile strength 100–110 MPa
- Continuous service temperature 250 °C
- Short-term peaks > 300 °C
- Virtually unlimited chemical resistance
- UL94-V0 fire rating
- Fatigue strength comparable to injection-molded PEEK
This is exactly the level of performance used in jet engines, Formula 1 vehicles, spinal implants, and deep-drilling tools – now available as a 1 kg spool.
Master these parameters, and you will be producing real end-use parts that are not feasible with any other desktop or prosumer material.
Print responsibly. Print PEEK.
